The Egyptian artist Mona Zaki broke into tears while talking about the difficulties she faced throughout her career during her acceptance of the “Lifetime Achievement” award at the opening of the ninth edition of the El Gouna Film Festival, affirming that the support of her colleagues helped her overcome moments of downfall, sending a message to young artists about facing fear and not succumbing to it.

A tribute amidst the applause of fellow artists

Mona Zaki received the award from director Mohamed Shaker Khedher, with whom she collaborated on the series “Under Guardianship,” which achieved critical and popular success during the Ramadan drama season of 2023, amidst warm applause from the audience celebrating her artistic career.

She began her speech by recalling a moment involving the artist Fathi Abdel Wahab, who said after winning the Best Actor award for his role in the film “Birds of the Nile” at the Cairo International Film Festival in 2009: “Thank you… God is kind,” to which Mona commented: “Indeed, He is kind to me, and His kindness is great,” expressing her gratitude for the success and support she has received throughout her journey.

Mona Zaki: My colleagues supported me in the toughest times

The Egyptian artist addressed the fear that Shaker Khedher mentioned while introducing her, explaining that it accompanied her at different stages of her life, coinciding with the successes and challenges she experienced in her career.

She praised the role her colleagues played in supporting her during difficult times, saying: “I have fallen many times, and you are the ones who helped me up,” and she thanked the directors, writers, and all the crew members she collaborated with, affirming that they provided her with support during times of fatigue and pressure, helping her overcome difficulties and continue working.

A message to young artists

Mona Zaki also sent a message to young artists, urging them not to let fear control them or hinder their steps, saying: “Do not let fear control you, try to ignore it, and put it under your feet; because fear restricts.”

In turn, she explained that her continuous confrontation with her fears was part of her artistic and human experience, considering that the internal struggle and the attempt to overcome fear give a person the ability to rise after stumbling and continue on the path.

She concluded her speech by affirming her desire to continue her artistic journey, saying: “God willing, I will continue,” in a message that conveyed appreciation to all who supported her and determination to persist despite the challenges.
