تأهل ليفربول إلى الدور ربع النهائي من بطولة كأس رابطة المحترفين الإنجليزية لكرة القدم، بعد فوزه على ضيفه تشيلسي بركلات الترجيح (6 – 5)، عقب انتهاء الوقت الأصلي بالتعادل بهدفٍ لمثله، في المباراة التي جمعتهما ضمن منافسات الدور ثمن النهائي من البطولة.
وتقدم تشيلسي بهدفٍ سجله مورغان روجرز في الدقيقة (40)، قبل أن يدرك كودي خاكبو التعادل لليفربول في الدقيقة (44).
ولجأ الفريقان إلى ركلات الترجيح بعد انتهاء الوقت الأصلي بالتعادل، ليحسم ليفربول تأهله بتسجيل ست ركلات مقابل خمس لتشيلسي.
كما تأهل مانشستر سيتي إلى الدور ذاته بعد فوزه على برايتون بركلات الترجيح (4 – 3)، عقب انتهاء الوقت الأصلي بالتعادل بهدفين لمثلهما.
وفي بقية مباريات الدور ثمن النهائي، تأهل بورنموث بفوزه على أستون فيلا بثلاثة أهداف دون رد، وكريستال بالاس بتغلبه على فولهام بهدفٍ دون رد، وبرينتفورد بعد فوزه على سندرلاند بثلاثة أهداف مقابل هدفين.
Liverpool qualified for the quarter-finals of the English Football League Cup after defeating their guest Chelsea in a penalty shootout (6 – 5), following a draw in regular time with one goal each, in the match that brought them together in the round of 16 of the tournament.
Chelsea took the lead with a goal scored by Morgan Rogers in the (40th) minute, before Cody Gakpo equalized for Liverpool in the (44th) minute.
Both teams resorted to penalties after the regular time ended in a draw, with Liverpool securing their qualification by scoring six penalties compared to five for Chelsea.
Manchester City also qualified for the same round after defeating Brighton in a penalty shootout (4 – 3), following a draw in regular time with two goals each.
In the rest of the matches in the round of 16, Bournemouth qualified by beating Aston Villa three goals to none, Crystal Palace overcame Fulham with a goal to nil, and Brentford won against Sunderland three goals to two.
