بدأ المنتخب الأمريكي المباراة بضغط هجومي مستفيداً من عاملي الأرض والجمهور، ما أسفر عن هدف مبكر سجله لاعب باراغواي داميان بوباديلا بالخطأ في مرماه في الدقيقة السابعة.
وعزز فولارين بالوغون تقدم الولايات المتحدة بهدف ثانٍ في الدقيقة 31 بتسديدة قوية من داخل منطقة الجزاء سكنت الزاوية اليسرى لحارس باراغواي، ثم أضاف اللاعب نفسه الهدف الثالث قبل نهاية الشوط الأول بعدما تلاعب بدفاع المنافس وأطلق تسديدة قوية في الشباك.
