Cristiano Ronaldo has given the Portuguese national team a footballing value whose impact has extended from the pitch to its image in the world, becoming the most prominent name that embodies the ambition of the team and its scoring power. His presence has accompanied the team’s transition from striving for major titles to winning three of them, leaving a legacy that is hard to replace. Cristiano Ronaldo deserves an ending that befits what he has given to Portugal in terms of goals, titles, and global presence. Therefore, the circumstances that led him to leave the national team’s camp seem closer to disappointment and raise questions about the appreciation of a player who has become his country’s all-time top scorer and the one who has worn its jersey the most. Jesus has the right to make technical choices, but Ronaldo’s promise to participate followed by keeping him off the pitch has opened a wound that goes beyond the bench to the trust between the player and his coach. If this crisis ends with his international retirement, it will be a harsh conclusion to a career that deserves a farewell as grand as its contributions.
