Accusations have followed several literary works due to a preface written by a cultural figure for the publication of a male or female writer. Critics and readers recalled the discussions surrounding the late poet Saadi Youssef’s relationship with the novel “Memory in the Flesh” by novelist Ahlam Mosteghanemi. Recently, social media users revived the debate over the novel “Girls of Riyadh” due to the late Dr. Ghazi Al-Qusaibi’s praise for its author. The wheel of accusations may not have stopped spinning; writer Sid Mahmoud was labeled a shadow writer for penning the preface to Egyptian Culture Minister Jihan Zaki’s book “Coco Chanel and the Strength of Hearts… Braids of Formation and Betrayal,” which quotes from Suhair Abdel Hamid’s book “The Lady of the Palace… Assassination of the Strength of Hearts Al-Damardashi.” In this context, there are approaches that range from exonerating the accused to acknowledging the validity of the claims.

Poet Mousa Hawamda believes that not all introductions are alike, as some are merely acts of flattery. He considers some introductions essential, especially for translations, literary works, or Zionist biographies, as was the case with the late translator Ghazi Al-Saadi in his translation of the memoirs of some leaders of the Zionist movement, or with Dr. Imad Nabil and Fathi Al-Maskini’s translation of Heidegger, or Jabra Ibrahim’s introduction to Shakespeare. He emphasized that flattering writings are numerous and common, noting that he has read introductions by some great writers that were filled with hypocrisy and lies.

Meanwhile, poet Nimer Saadi regarded the book’s introduction as the golden gateway to the text, asserting that writing a preface for a literary work (be it a book, a novel, or a poetry collection) does not automatically mean that the preface writer has a direct and genuine role in the authorship or shaping of the work or in directly influencing its author. He recalled the writings of Dr. Taha Hussein and writer Abbas Mahmoud Al-Aqqad, who wrote dozens or perhaps hundreds of introductions for other writers and poets. He believes that the role of the preface writer or the critical introduction at the beginning of a literary book often serves a critical and analytical role, highlighting the sources of beauty and hidden messages within to facilitate the reader’s reception.

He added: It may serve as a certificate of endorsement and moral support, as young writers often request well-known writers and critics to write introductions for their first works as a form of literary endorsement or a kind of poetic guardianship, like the introduction by the Prince of Poets Ahmed Shawqi to Amin Nakhlah’s poetry collection “Notebook of Flirtation,” in which he praises his high poetic status despite his young age at the time.

He argued that introductions generally shed light on the essence of the book or test the reader’s taste and stimulate their mind to receive the book, granting the literary work greater credibility and appeal in reality or in the market. He pointed out that illuminating the context is usually at the heart of the introduction, as the preface writer focuses on explaining the historical, political, or personal circumstances in which this literary work was born and the exceptional conditions surrounding its formation. The introduction hints at roles, including that of the translator who explains their methodology in translation and the linguistic challenges they faced, and the literary editor, who reviews, modifies, and formats the text in agreement with the author. The editor takes on the role of investigator or researcher, and he believes that the mention of a prominent critic or brilliant thinker in the preface of a poetic, intellectual, or literary book acknowledges their value and literary or critical weight, and does not necessarily imply a partnership in creativity or authorship unless otherwise explicitly stated in the preface itself.

He clarified that the introduction to “One Thousand and One Nights” by Dr. Suhair Al-Qalamawi was written by Taha Hussein, who presented the work, which he considered one of the most important studies of folk literature in the Arab world. He added that Al-Aqqad’s introductions are known for their intellectual rigor, philosophical depth, and historical debate that breaks traditional molds, including the introduction to “The Timurid Encyclopedia” by the scholar Ahmed Timour Pasha, which Al-Aqqad presented in his well-known critical and rhetorical style. He noted that one of the deepest introductions is that of Lebanese writer and translator Iskandar Habash to Mario Vargas Llosa’s novel “The Notebooks of Don Rigoberto,” which he considered a comprehensive and critical vision of the Arabic version of the novel, characterized by deep and brilliant critical analysis. Habash provided a notable critical analysis upon which readers built their understanding of Llosa’s worlds, considering the novel a natural extension and completion of Llosa’s previous novel “In Praise of Aunt,” even though Habash did not translate it; it was translated by Saleh Al-Ali. Saadi added: Whether the preface is written by the author of the book itself or any other writer, the preface is often a luminous threshold through which we enter to understand the nature of the book and its unknown world, and he sees it as the magic key that captivates the reader.

Writer Aboud Al-Jabri expressed his reservations about false paternity, manifested in some individuals’ claims of ownership of works they did not create themselves, relying on certain roles, such as volunteering to edit a book or providing specific comments that the author considers. He pointed out that a hidden factor contributes to this issue, represented by a factor that some do not dare to openly state or refer to when the book is authored by a novice female writer who resorts to a famous writer, who then claims false paternity when their relationship deteriorates.

He considered the desire to reap the fruits of a work’s success after its spread, the need to glorify oneself, and the attempt to reshape memory to improve self-image, as reasons for this phenomenon, emphasizing that despite the importance of these roles, they do not qualify a person to acquire the title of author. He deemed the lack of clarity regarding the boundaries of collaboration as a reason for exacerbating the problem.

Novelist Ali Atta did not hide his impression of those who write introductions for books they have not read at all, explaining that he recognizes this not by guesswork but by comparing the introduction with the body of the book and discovering how general the introduction is and how weak its connection is to what it presents. He considered what was raised about Saadi Youssef and Nizar Qabbani to fall under the category of rumors and gossip, as Suad Al-Sabah did not say that Nizar wrote for her, even though it is possible that she was influenced by his themes related to the female voice in much of his poetry. Similarly, Ahlam Mosteghanemi did not state that Saadi Youssef wrote for her, noting that each of the two writers has works that appeared after the passing of the other, and he believes that perhaps one of them entrusted someone else to write for them, and it is said about them that they are a “shadow writer,” but usually there is nothing to rely on to definitively assert that this occurred.

He said: I cannot bring myself to ask someone to write a preface for my book, and a writer can write their own preface if necessary, and others can later write what they like about my book in an article or even in just a post on “Facebook.”

There is no kinship between the text and its author

Researcher Amal Sarim denied the overlap between the work of the creative writer, regardless of the genre of their work (novel, story, poetry, biography, or study), and the work of the preface writer for the creative work, as the one who presents the creative work comes after the creator has emptied their thoughts and gathered the material. The credit for composing the work belongs to the creator, while the preface writer builds their preface on the work and its author, explaining that the preface may be critical, descriptive, or situational within its literary or methodological trajectory, depending on its type, or it may be a personal confession that narrates the intersections of the creative self with the preface writer, addressing the creator’s relationship with others and the world, their creative fingerprints, and artistic effects. She pointed out that there is no kinship between the creative text and its author on one hand, and the one who presented the creative work on the other hand. The relationship between them is a causal one, arising from the creative work and formed upon it.
